Everyone talks about microphones and hosting platforms. Nobody mentions the weird stuff. Like how you’ll spend more time editing silence than actual speech, or how your own voice will sound unbearable for the first ten episodes before you stop noticing.
Here are a few things we wish someone had told us before we hit record for the first time.
First, your first episode will be bad. Not charmingly rough. Bad. Record it anyway and publish it anyway. You can’t improve what doesn’t exist. Second, episode titles matter more than you think. Most listeners are scanning a list in their podcast app, and a vague title means a skipped episode. Third, “weekly” is a promise to your audience and a threat to your calendar. Pick a schedule you can actually sustain for six months, not one that sounds impressive.
Fourth, show notes aren’t optional. They help with discoverability and give listeners a reason to visit your site. Fifth, nobody’s first microphone is their last microphone. Buy something reasonable, learn to use it well, and upgrade later when you actually know what you want.
